Balance Hormones Naturally With Seed Cycling

Too often PMS symptoms and regulating cycles is addressed with birth control pills or thrown to the side and called “normal.” Let me just say, dreadful PMS symptoms are actually not normal and managing your cycle does not have to be controlled by a tiny pill with huge side effects.

I understand where you’re coming from because I was on birth control for seven years and I am now paying for the effects. I thought that was the only way to regulate my cycle but thankfully I have found a “food is medicine” approach that you can easily implement into your daily routine.

What is seed cycling?

This natural method cycles several seeds during a month span to detox, metabolize, and boost the female hormones back into balance. The cycle is tracked with the moon’s cycle, New to Full Moon and back because a women’s cycle has historically been said to follow the lunar cycle. A women’s cycle is not always 30 days but we will use it as an example for today.

Who is this good for?

This is good for any women who is dealing with unwanted PMS (this tends to be MANY women), irregular cycles, or no period at all. For the women dealing with PMS, I want you to understand that although these symptoms are normalized, they are not actually normal. Those symptoms are your body showing you that something is off, that’s why we crave certain foods like chocolate for example because in reality our body is craving the magnesium in the dark chocolate. I also want to note that if you are on the pill, this method will not work as well because the artificial hormones are controlling your cycle and giving you a pill bleed so it is hard for this more natural approach to have any effect. If you choose to go off the pill, using seed cycling is an amazing way to address the underlying hormone issue with a more easy, non-invasive approach.

  • Excessive physical stress (Maybe too much HIIT isn't a good thing after all)

  • Excessive mental stress

  • Environmental toxins (the air you breathe, water you drink, chemical on food, cleaning products, makeup products etc.)

  • Poor Diet (highly processed foods and sugar)

  • Food Sensitivities (Dairy,soy,and gluten are common ones)

  • Digestive Issues

  • High Coffee/Alcohol consumption

How to Seed Cycle:

Now that you may have identified some unwanted symptoms and causes, lets get you ready to start taking a more natural approach to healing and feeling ahhhmazing.

Day 1-14 (Follicular Phase, New-Full Moon)

This will occur during your first day of mensturation until ovulation begins again. Using flax seeds and pumpkin seeds during this phase will support estrogen production. During your follicular phase is when you need more estrogen in order to build back up the uterine lining lost. However, estrogen dominance is commonly seen with women who are experiencing PMS symptoms so you may be thinking “Why would I want more estrogen?” The wonderful thing about flaxseeds is that they help decrease a form of estrogen called estradiol that we don’t want high amounts of and can help regulate the good forms of estrogen.

  • Combine 1 tbs each of raw, organic,and ground pumpkin and flaxseeds everyday. It is important to eat them in their raw form to maintain the nutrients and ground them to make it easier for digestion.

  • Additionally, consuming high omega 3’s such as a good quality fish oil is beneficial during this time.

Day 15-30 (Luteal Phase, Full-New Moon)

The second part of the cycle is all about thickening the lining during the luteal phase for when ovulation occurs. This is where progesterone comes in, another sex hormone that is critical for ovulation. Using sesame and sunflower seeds, naturally high in zinc and vitamin E, will boost progesterone levels. Common signs of low progesterone are high anxiety and irregular or loss of menstrual cycle.

  • Combine 1 tbs each of raw, organic, and ground sesame and sunflower seeds everyday. Again make sure to grind them and eat them in their raw state to get the most benefits.

  • Additionally, taking evening primrose oil in pill form is beneficial during this time.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Make it part of your routine aka have it in your morning smoothie or on your salad at lunch etc. everyday.

  2. Create a raw vegan treat that has 1tbs of both seeds per serving so you’ll easily take one everyday.

  4. Only prepare several days worth of ground seeds and store in fridge. Keep the remaining in the freezer to prevent from oxidation.

  5. If you do not have your period, it is especially helpful to follow the moon cycle and start your day 1 with the new moon.

  6. It is okay to eat other seeds like chia seeds during each cycle but try not to mix flax/pumpkin with sunflower/sesame seeds.

  7. To grind the seeds, you can use a blender, food processor, or coffee grinder.

Seed Cycling Protein Ball Recipe:

If you want to only make enough for 7 days at a time then half the recipe.

Ingredients: (Makes 14 servings)

  • 1 Cup Flax Seeds (or Sesame depending on which phase)

  • 1 Cup Pumpkin Seeds (or Sunflower depending on which phase)

  • 2 Scoops Collagen protein (optional but helps with skin + hair health)

  • 1/2 Cup shredded coconut

  • 4 Dates

  • 1/3 Cup almond butter or other nut butter

  • 2 tbs Coconut oil

  • 1 tsp Vanilla

  • 1 tbs Honey or natural maple syrup

  • 1/4 Cup filtered water

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend until semi smooth

  2. Once processed, scoop out and form into balls by rolling between palms

  3. Place in the fridge or freezer to keep fresh
